July 12 (UPI) — Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz delivered a crucial performance in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game held in Seattle, leading the National League to a 3-2 victory over the American League. Diaz’s eighth-inning two-run homer broke the American League’s nine-game winning streak in the Midsummer Classic.
“It’s just a lot of emotions,” Diaz expressed during the Fox broadcast. “I was caught up in the moment and overwhelmed with the emotions. I never thought I’d be in this position in my career. To be able to contribute to the win and be the MVP is really special.”
Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Diaz initially gave the American League a 1-0 edge with a home run in the second inning, but Miami Marlins’ Luis Arraez tied the score with an RBI single in the fourth. Toronto Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette briefly restored the lead for the American League with an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth.
In the eighth inning, Baltimore Orioles’ Felix Bautista walked Philadelphia Phillies’ Nick Castellanos, setting up Elias Diaz’s thrilling moment. Diaz connected with an 86.9-mph splitter, sending it soaring over the left field wall and earning himself the All-Star Game MVP title.
Pitcher Craig Kimbrell from the Philadelphia Phillies closed out the game, striking out Jose Ramirez to secure the National League’s first triumph since 2012.
With the regular season set to resume on Friday, the MLB action promises to continue with the Philadelphia Phillies hosting the San Diego Padres for the first game of the second half.
