El Segundo All-Stars Return to Little League World Series Action on Monday

The highly skilled team from El Segundo will continue their journey in the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Monday, just four victories away from claiming the championship.

Their next opponent will be the formidable all-star team from the Needville (Texas) Little League, who emerged as the Southwest Region champions. In their most recent match, Needville secured a 6-2 victory over the Fargo (North Dakota) Little League, the Midwest Region champions. With this win, they now stand at 2-0 in the modified double-elimination tournament, which consists of 20 teams.

El Segundo started off the tournament on a high note, triumphing over the all-star team from the New Albany (Ohio) Little League, the Great Lakes Region champions, in a thrilling game called off after four innings due to inclement weather and Little League curfew regulations. The final score was 4-3 in favor of El Segundo.

Louis Lappe became the hero of the game when he hit a tie-breaking home run in the bottom of the third inning, right after Brody Brooks’ impressive two-run home run. Brooks’ hit was so powerful that it went over the glove of Eddie Bloch, the center fielder for New Albany, and soared over the fence at Howard J. Lamade Stadium.

New Albany managed to score twice in the second inning without hitting the ball out of the infield. Bloch started the rally with a walk, leading Danny Boehle, the manager of El Segundo, to replace Ollie Parks with Declan McRoberts, who initially played as the third baseman. McRoberts made an error, allowing Lincoln Luffler to reach base safely. Alex Behaein’s bunt single loaded the bases, and Bloch scored on Austin Sturmi’s infield single. Jake Gilmer then drove Luffler in with a ground out.

In the first inning, Brooks received a walk with a full count and advanced to third base on Lucas Keldorf’s double. Max Baker’s ground out helped Brooks score and put El Segundo on the board. New Albany responded by drawing four walks, resulting in a run in their half of the inning. Both teams ended up with three hits in the game.

McRoberts earned the victory in this match, pitching three innings and allowing only one run and three hits. He also struck out five batters. Kevin Klingerman pitched a complete game for New Albany, giving up four runs and three hits in four innings, while recording six strikeouts and five walks.

Prior to the game, Boehle mentioned in an interview with KNX that some of his players had been dealing with a stomach virus, but that didn’t deter their determination to succeed.

In their summer tournaments, El Segundo has been dominant with a record of 15-1. Their only loss came in the opening game of the championship series in the Southern California State Tournament against the all-star team from the Sherman Oaks Little League. However, they quickly bounced back and won the rematch later that day with a score of 3-2, starting their impressive five-game winning streak.
