Union Station in downtown Los Angeles received its eighth bus of migrants from Texas on Thursday, according to a statement from Mayor Karen Bass’ office and the L.A. Welcomes Collective. The bus, carrying 40 migrants from Brownsville, Texas, arrived at approximately 11:08 a.m. It consisted of 14 families, including 12 children aged 9 months to 17 years old, as reported by the collective, an organization that collaborates with immigrant-rights workers, faith organizations, and providers in Los Angeles.
Out of the total number of arrivals on Thursday, the largest group, about 29 individuals, came from Venezuela. The rest came from Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, according to the collective. Zach Seidl, a spokesman for Mayor Bass, stated, “This is the eighth bus that has arrived. The City has continued to work with City Departments, the County, and a coalition of nonprofit organizations, in addition to our faith partners, to execute a plan set in place earlier this year. As we have before, when we became aware of the bus yesterday, we activated our plan.”
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles (CHIRLA), a member of the collective, stated that nearly all asylum seekers have relatives, loved ones, or sponsors in California.
Since June 14, when the first bus from Texas arrived at Union Station, a total of 323 asylum seekers have now arrived in Los Angeles. The buses have been dispatched by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
CHIRLA stated, “Migrants were immediately taken to a receiving site in Chinatown where they were offered urgent humanitarian support services, including food, clothing, hygiene kits, health checkups, and legal immigration orientations. The collective also facilitated reunions with family members, loved ones, and sponsors residing in the region.” Martha Arevalo, the executive director of Central American Resource Center, expressed their dedication to warmly receiving migrants with love and dignity.
Michael P. Donaldson, senior director for the Office of Life, Justice and Peace with Archdiocese of Los Angeles, stated that the Catholic church embraces and supports migrants and refugees arriving in Los Angeles. Previous buses from Texas have arrived in Los Angeles in June and throughout July.
Governor Abbott has been organizing these buses from Brownsville to California, citing overwhelming numbers of immigrants crossing the Mexican border in Texas. He criticized President Biden’s failure to secure the border and stated that Texas will continue providing relief until the issue is addressed.
On Friday, the L.A. City Council’s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee will discuss motions that call for an investigation into potential human trafficking or other crimes committed on or before June 14. They will also consider a report and resolution seeking financial, humanitarian, and legal assistance from the federal, state, and county governments.
