Edinburgh Festival 2023: A Lukewarm Review of Nova’s Mediocre Adventures

O

behi Janice
had a circle of friends at school who, like her, were academically inclined and nerdy. She had an early fascination with boys that continued into her older years. In fact, even recently, she still finds herself attracted to them. Yoga is not her strong suit, but she did have a pleasant trip to Paris and enjoys the music of

Sir Shina Peters
.

She finds all of this intriguing, and it’s worth pondering why we should also find interest in such commonplace experiences. This Los Angeles-based writer and performer effortlessly delivers this everyday collection of experiences with the finesse and self-assuredness of a seasoned standup. However, without the enthusiastic response from the first-night audience, this feeble material, complete with obscure references to the US, would appear exposed.

It takes a while into her routine before we grasp why Nova has been included in the fringe’s theatre programme instead of comedy, where it would feel more at home (if not somewhat lost among the plethora of attention-seeking observational standups).

Eventually, though, she introduces Giacomo Casanova into the meandering conversation and is taken aback when we already know that he was a genuine historical figure. Stepping back from the jokes, she argues in favor of transforming herself into the female equivalent of the philandering Italian. She embraces her enjoyment of both sex and travel, so why not?

However, her rules would be different. She refuses to accept the exoticization she encounters as a Nigerian-American woman dating white men. Furthermore, she believes that sex should not be a transactional game, as it was for Casanova, but rather an expression of love.

These ideas are hardly groundbreaking and, considering Casanova is no longer the name on everyone’s lips, not even particularly topical. If her tales of unsatisfactory encounters with men were centered around significant grievances rather than minor disappointments, her argument might have held more weight. As it stands, Nova remains trapped in its own self-absorbed world.
