Dylan Mulvaney, the social media influencer who faced backlash earlier this year for partnering with Bud Light, received recognition at the Streamy Awards on Sunday. Mulvaney won the breakout creator award and used the opportunity to advocate for the rights of the LGBT community. They highlighted the similarities between trans individuals and social media stars and called on the audience to use their influence to promote anti-hate messages.
Mulvaney acknowledged the controversy around their partnership with Bud Light, which was cancelled due to homophobic complaints. They encouraged the Streamy crowd to leverage their reach to combat hate speech. Mulvaney concluded their speech by humorously stating their intention to go have a beer.
The 13th Streamy Awards ceremony, hosted by YouTuber MatPat, was filled with excitement. Top nominees like AMP, Ryan Trahan, Jay Shetty, Mikayla Nogueira, HasanAbi, and Kai Cenat garnered support from dedicated fans in the audience. Attendees also brought their older children to help them identify the social media stars in attendance.
Acceptance speeches were kept brief and personal, deviating from the usual practice of listing agents and publicists. Most winners expressed their gratitude with variations of the phrase “appreciate you.”
However, there were touching moments as well. TikTok star Chris Olsen, known for his work with Meghan Trainor, spoke from the heart when receiving the trophy for short form content. He attributed his success to his decision to seek help and get sober at the age of 19, imparting the importance of self-care to the audience.
The nonprofit organization Invisible People received the Elevate Prize for Social Good for their coverage of the growing chronic homeless population. Mark Horvath, the organization’s founder, discussed the continuing homelessness crisis in Los Angeles and emphasized the need for community involvement in finding solutions.
Kai Cenat, a Twitch personality, was awarded Streamer of the Year despite being charged with inciting a riot. Cenat expressed gratitude towards God and recognized the blessings in his life.
Creator of the Year was once again bestowed upon YouTuber MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson. Although he did not attend the event, there was humor in the air as Link from Rhett and Link jokingly commented on MrBeast’s absence.
The Show of the Year award was given to “Challenge Accepted,” hosted by Michelle Khane. Khane dispelled the notion that social media content is hastily produced, explaining that each episode takes about a year to create and involves various challenging tasks.
Meghan Trainor received the Rolling Stone Sound of the Year accolade for her hit song “Made You Look,” which she dedicated to her postpartum body.
The Streamy Awards are organized by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter, which is owned by Variety parent Penske Media Corp.
