Google has announced that it will begin charging large businesses $30 per user per month for its artificial intelligence (AI) enhancements in Gmail and other productivity apps.
The AI technology, called Duet AI, will be priced the same as Microsoft’s 365 Copilot enhancements, which are expected to launch in the first half of next year. Both companies are incorporating generative AI into their core products to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot.
In addition to existing subscription fees, Google is offering free trials to companies before committing to the subscription. Pricing for smaller organizations and individual users is yet to be finalized.
Aparna Pappu, Vice President and General Manager of Google Workspace, stated that the pricing was determined considering customers’ willingness to pay for the value provided.
Google quietly started accepting preorders for Duet AI in May at the $30 per user price, while Microsoft announced its pricing in July.
Although Google derives a majority of its revenue from online ads, its Workspace, which falls under Google Cloud, is gaining traction. The company reported that Workspace now has 10 million paying customers, with over a million people trying the new AI capabilities through a “trusted tester” program.
In Gmail and Google Docs, users can prompt Duet AI to generate results based on simple text input. Similarly, Google Slides can create images based on descriptive text. Duet AI can also assist with project planning in Google Sheets and note-taking in Google Meet.

Microsoft has introduced similar features with its 365 Copilot, including a paid early access program for selected clients.
Google plans to release a consumer version of Duet AI for Google Workspace in early next year, expanding its availability to even more users.
