Dublin Hotel, The Westin, Abandons New Name Due to Slave History Association

In April, The Westin Hotel located on Westmoreland Street in the city of Dublin made an announcement about changing its name to The Westmoreland Hotel.

However, it was soon revealed that the new name had been chosen inadvertently, leading to the hotel being named after John Fane, the 10th Earl of Westmorland, who was known for his defense of slavery.

According to The Irish Times, John Fane defended slavery and opposed efforts to end it in the House of Lords in London in 1799.

After receiving feedback from patrons and others, general manager Joanne Dillon has confirmed that the hotel will reverse its decision and instead be known as The College Green Hotel.

Joanne Dillon stated, “College Green is a historic yet contemporary and dynamic location in Dublin, where different journeys converge at the heart of a bustling city.” She further explained that the feedback and reflection on the environment and patron experience influenced their decision to choose a new name.

She expressed excitement about adopting The College Green Hotel as their new brand, stating that it feels right for both the hotel and its patrons, present and future. The name change will take place at the end of the year, and until then, the hotel will continue as The Westin Dublin.

As of now, the hotel’s website has not been updated to reflect the new name and still mentions the re-imagining of The Westin as The Westmoreland Hotel on June 13.

The hotel will become an Autograph Collection Hotel, continuing its journey with and as part of Marriott Bonvoy.

The College Green Hotel has undergone significant investments over the past two years, including the refurbishment of guest bedrooms and suites, the addition of heritage bedrooms, and a redesigned hotel lobby. The hotel aims to showcase its unique personality, its central Dublin location, and its luxurious amenities while continuing to provide genuine Irish hospitality and five-star service.
