Drone Search Rescues Missing Man Near Altadena: A Remarkable Recovery Story

A man from Michigan who disappeared while hiking in the Mount Wilson area above Altadena was discovered by search teams using a drone on Thursday. He was then safely rescued.

Officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department previously announced that Aleksander Novak Zemplinski, 43, was reported missing late Sunday, and it was believed he had been on Mount Wilson Red Box Road.

On Wednesday night, investigators found an abandoned vehicle parked in an unusual spot near the area. A search was conducted in the surrounding hillsides, but with no success.

On Thursday morning, the search resumed with the assistance of a drone team. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the drone’s cameras located the missing man approximately 200 feet over the side of the road. Although he was awake, he could barely move.

Ground crews reached the location identified by the drone and provided assistance to the man, who had potentially been exposed to the elements for a couple of days, according to sheriff’s officials.

Later, a sheriff’s helicopter crew hoisted him out of the area and transported him to a hospital in moderate condition, as reported by the sheriff’s department.
