Hyundai’s highly popular electric SUV, the Ioniq 5, is facing safety concerns due to a series of complaints. US owners have reported experiencing complete or partial power loss in their vehicles, as confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The loss of power seems to be preceded by a loud popping noise, according to many of the complaints received.
In response to these issues, Hyundai has announced that it will be providing a software update starting next month. Additionally, if deemed necessary, the company will replace the affected components in the vehicles. The NHTSA has reported receiving a total of 30 complaints in relation to this problem, with an estimated 39,500 of the affected vehicles being on US highways. A preliminary investigation conducted by a division within the NHTSA suggests that a recharging issue is at play here. Specifically, a power surge is causing damage to transistors, thereby preventing the vehicles’ 12-volt batteries from recharging.
Regarding the investigation, Hyundai spokesperson Ira Gabriel stated that the company is fully cooperating and will be launching a service campaign in July to update the software in the affected vehicles. In addition to the software update, Hyundai will also replace the Integrated Control Charging Unit if necessary. The company believes that resolving these issues promptly is crucial, given the global push for electric vehicles (EVs) as a replacement for traditional gasoline-burning cars. EVs are seen as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming.
