In a significant development, Proud Boys members Dominic Pezzola and Ethan Nordean were handed down sentences on Friday for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, riot in Washington. Ethan Nordean, who held a leadership position within the group, received the longest sentence so far in the Jan. 6 prosecutions with 18 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly expressed his disappointment, remarking on Nordean’s lack of a criminal record throughout his upbringing. The Justice Department confirmed that Nordean and Pezzola played pivotal roles in breaching the Capitol, dismantling barricades, destroying property, and assaulting police. Meanwhile, Dominic Pezzola, known for smashing a Capitol window with a riot shield, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Despite being acquitted of the charge of seditious conspiracy, Pezzola faced felony counts related to obstruction of an official proceeding and destruction of government property. Prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence, but Judge Kelly denied the request. While Nordean, Rehl, Biggs, and Tarrio were labeled leaders of the Jan. 6 mob by prosecutors, Pezzola was characterized as an enthusiastic foot soldier and one of the most violent participants. His actions, including stealing a riot shield and declaring his intent to take over the Capitol building, were highlighted by the prosecutors. Pezzola’s sentencing follows the recent sentencing of Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl to 17 and 15 years in prison, respectively, for seditious conspiracy. The sentencing of Enrique Tarrio is scheduled for Tuesday.
