New York Yankees starting pitcher, Domingo German, who had a 4.56 ERA through 20 appearances this season with a record of 5-7, has decided to step away from the team and enter inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. This decision comes after German threw a perfect game earlier in the season. The announcement was made by the New York Yankees on Wednesday. General Manager Brian Cashman stated that German is not expected to pitch for the rest of the season. German voluntarily agreed to undergo treatment and will be placed on the restricted list while he is away from the team. The Yankees added that they will respect his privacy during this process.

Aug. 3 (UPI) — The New York Yankees confirmed that German’s treatment for alcohol abuse was a priority and emphasized the importance of his health and well-being. The team expressed its support for German as he starts this journey toward recovery.

Domingo German achieved a historic milestone by throwing a perfect game in a match against the Oakland Athletics on June 28 in Oakland, Calif. This marked the first perfect game in Major League Baseball since 2012. However, German’s recent decision to seek treatment has put his future on the field in question.

German, who is 30 years old, has a career record of 31-28 with a 4.41 ERA through 112 appearances. He faced a suspension of 81 games in 2020 for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy. Furthermore, he received a 10-game ban in May for violating MLB’s foreign substance policy. German is eligible for arbitration in 2024 and could become a free agent in 2025.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman addressed the team before their game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, where he discussed German’s situation. Cashman acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and expressed hope that German’s decision to seek treatment will have a positive impact on his life in the long run.

The New York Yankees will face the Houston Astros in their upcoming game at 7:15 p.m. EDT on Thursday, hosted at Yankee Stadium. Despite the challenges they face with German’s absence, the Yankees will continue to strive for success on the field.
