Dodge and Ram Outperform Tesla and Volvo

Power, new vehicles in general are facing a range of quality problems, unlike anything seen in the past 37 years of the study’s history.

Frank Hanley, the senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, commented on this phenomenon, stating, “Today’s new vehicles are more complex, offering new and exciting technology, but not always satisfying owners.” This complexity, driven by advancements in safety systems and other technologies, has contributed to a rise in industry-wide problems, with an average of 192 issues per 100 vehicles.

The study specifically highlighted challenges with advanced driver-assistance features, such as lane-departure warnings and automatic emergency braking. Additionally, wireless charging pads for smartphones have posed widespread issues for automakers. Surprisingly, even seemingly basic components like door handles have become problematic, with electric vehicles, including those from Tesla, being particularly affected.

In terms of brand rankings, three Stellantis brands – Dodge, Ram, and Alfa Romeo – took the top spots for quality. On the other hand, Tesla, Polestar, and Volvo landed at the bottom of the list, experiencing 257 and 313 problems per 100 vehicles, respectively. General Motors had a strong showing, with all four of their brands – Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac – ranking in the top 10.

Unfortunately, Ford Motor didn’t fare as well. Both the Ford brand and Lincoln fell below average in this year’s tally. Similarly, Toyota, a longstanding paragon of quality, underperformed with 194 problems per 100 vehicles, slightly worse than the industry average. However, brands like Dodge, Ram, Buick, Porsche, and Cadillac were praised for their initial quality, with each securing top positions in their respective market segments.

Notably, electric vehicle manufacturers such as Tesla and Polestar were not officially included in the study due to legal restrictions on accessing customer data. However, J.D. Power was able to calculate scores for these brands based on data from other states. While Lucid and Rivian weren’t eligible for rankings and awards due to limited sample sizes, their performance was factored into the overall industry averages.

The annual Initial Quality Study by J.D. Power holds significant weight in the auto industry. The rankings are based on responses from over 93,000 participants who are new car buyers or lessees of current model-year vehicles, providing feedback within their first 90 days of ownership. In addition to initial quality, J.D. Power conducts separate surveys to assess long-term dependability, the appeal of new vehicle features, and customers’ purchasing experiences across different brands.
