Doctors plan to file a legal case against the General Medical Council for not taking action against conspiracy theorists.

A row has erupted between doctors and the General Medical Council (GMC), with medics accusing the regulator of failing to hold doctors accountable for spreading false information about Covid-19 vaccines. According to reports, the GMC, which is supposed to police doctors and take necessary measures to protect the public, is “wrongly shirking its statutory responsibility”. Recently, six clinicians launched a crowdfunding initiative to pay for a judicial review of the GMC’s actions, claiming its failure to act has had serious implications for public health. The doctors’ statement also criticised the lack of action against anti-vaxxers by the GMC, citing the expulsion of North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen by the Conservative Party for making “false and misleading” anti-vaccine statements. The GMC has since stated that it investigates cases involving risks to patients or public confidence, serious breaches of conduct, or proper professional standards.
