On December 1, 2023, the United States Attorney’s Office in Tucson, Arizona, filed a criminal complaint against 52-year-old John Turscak. The charges include attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The complaint alleges that Turscak, while incarcerated at Federal Correctional Institution Tucson, stabbed another inmate, D.C., approximately 22 times with an improvised knife. D.C. had previously been convicted of federal crimes in another district.
It’s important to note that a criminal complaint is not indicative of guilt and the accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
If convicted, attempted murder and assault with intent to commit murder each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years’ incarceration, while assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury each carry a maximum penalty of 10 years’ incarceration.
The investigation in this case was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the prosecution being handled by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Tucson.
