Discover When the Live-Action Adaptation of ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Faces Delay Amid Actors Strike

Get ready for more theatrical release date changes as the actors strike continues for 113 days. The silver lining: this particular change won’t affect 2024.

In a recent announcement, Universal and DreamWorks Animation revealed that their live-action adaptation of the animated film How to Train Your Dragon is shifting from March 14, 2025 to June 13, 2025.

Learn More:

Universal already had June 13, 2025 reserved on their release calendar.

For those anticipating big movie releases on March 14, 2025, note that no wide entries are scheduled for that date anymore. The new release date for How to Train Your Dragon currently has an untitled Pixar movie slotted alongside it.

The upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, a three-time Oscar nominee. DeBlois is known for his work as the writer and director of the entire Dragon trilogy, which is based on the bestselling book series by Cressida Cowell. The production will be led by three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt (La La Land, Bridge of Spies), DeBlois, and Emmy winner Adam Siegel (2 Guns, Drive).

The three animated Dragon movies have collectively earned over $1.6 billion worldwide and garnered four Oscar nominations, as well as a Golden Globe win for How to Train Your Dragon 2.

How to Train Your Dragon follows the story of a young Viking who dreams of dragon hunting but becomes an unlikely friend to a young dragon. Along the way, he discovers there’s more to these creatures than he once believed.

In addition, Universal has announced an untitled event movie scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

There are several untitled holds on the 2024 calendar by major studios. Whether those holds are permanent or just temporary placeholders remains to be seen.
