This button is designed to automatically shut down your vehicle when it’s stationary for extended periods, such as at a stoplight or in a drive-thru line.

Its purpose is to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.”

Stop-start engines are becoming increasingly common in newer, more advanced vehicles.

The system works by cutting off the engine when the car is stationary, and then restarting it when the brake is released, the clutch is engaged, or the accelerator is pressed.

This technology relies on another feature that detects when the car is not moving or not in gear.

When the car is motionless or out of gear, fuel supply to the engine is halted to prevent unnecessary idling, which wastes fuel and produces harmful emissions without any progress being made.

Using this feature can increase fuel economy by up to 12 percent.

According to the Royal College of Physicians, air pollution is responsible for an estimated 40,000 deaths per year in the UK, and idling engines contribute to this problem.

Rule 123 of The Highway Code addresses the well-being of both drivers and the environment.

It states that drivers must not leave their parked vehicles unattended with the engine running, nor should they leave the engine running unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary on a public road.

A study conducted by the US Department of Energy found that both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles waste around six billion gallons of fuel each year.

About half of this fuel waste can be attributed to personal vehicles, which produce approximately 30 million tonnes of CO2 annually through idling alone.

Additionally, a study by the Polytechnic University of Madrid compared the engine emissions of two four-wheel drive cars and discovered that the vehicle equipped with automatic stop-start functionality emitted 20 percent less pollution than the one without this technology.

Given that cities and towns often experience longer periods of stationary traffic, the emissions-reducing capability of stop-start systems is particularly important in these areas.
