David Harewood, known for his roles in Homeland and Blood Diamond, was raised in Birmingham and is a direct descendant of enslaved individuals who worked on a Caribbean sugar plantation owned by the 2nd Earl of Harewood in the 18th century.
As part of the Missing Portraits series, Harewood’s portrait will be showcased at Harewood House this weekend. This initiative aims to address the lack of diverse representation in the house’s art collection.
Harewood expressed his excitement about the inclusion of his portrait in the collection, stating, “Seeing my portrait enter the collection at Harewood House is a momentous occasion for myself and my family. It signifies the house’s recognition of its own history and the impact it has had on future generations.”
He also emphasized the importance of continuing discussions surrounding the legacy of slavery and its global impact: “It is vital that we continue to engage in conversations about the history of slavery and its ramifications in the United Kingdom and beyond.”
Accompanying the portrait will be an exhibition titled “David Harewood: What’s in a Name?” The exhibition will delve into Harewood’s personal life, career, and his advocacy work for mental health awareness and racial equality.
Ashley Karrell, co-creator of the exhibition, expressed her honor in being a part of this significant moment at Harewood House: “The portrait stands alongside the works from the 18th and 19th centuries, giving validation to those individuals who were once nameless and forgotten.”
