Kitt Peak National Observatory offers a unique opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts with nightly stays that provide extraordinary views of outer space. Run by the National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab, this federally-funded research center has been offering overnight visits for nearly three decades. The one-of-a-kind program, available for $945 on Eventbrite, or $1,350 with fees, assigns groups of four guests as “visiting astronomers” to one of four designated telescopes.
The 20-hour experience includes observing deep-sky objects, a dorm room, dinner, and the assistance of a professional scientist. Upon arrival, guests are introduced to their telescope operator who helps them use the powerful scientific instruments and locate certain celestial bodies.
Celestial wonders such as Jupiter, Mars, and Pluto may all be visible in one night, but guests should inquire in advance if they want to see specific objects, as some are too faint to be seen. No previous knowledge of astronomy is required to participate.
Although Kitt Peak was previously closed due to the pandemic and the 2022 Contreras Fire, the NOIRLab facilities reopened in June 2023, including programs at locations in Hawaii and Chile. Guests will have the opportunity to use the Levine 0.4-meter telescope and the 0.5-meter telescope, as well as a roll-off roof observatory that offers breathtaking views of the Milky Way.
While the telescopes on the premises may have malfunctions due to reopening after a period of shutdown, refunds are offered, minus the Eventbrite fee. If the facility is forced to cancel the program due to unpredictable weather or safety concerns, guests will receive a full refund. Enjoy a guided tour of this unique astronomical facility with outstanding telescopes, where you too can explore the universe like a true astronomer.
