When it comes to folding bikes, their small wheels can be vulnerable to potholes and urban hazards. However, the Bastille sets itself apart by using full-size 27.5-inch wheels while still being foldable in just 5 to 10 seconds.
Designed by French designer Gilles Henry, who was behind the popular Yoyo folding baby stroller, the Bastille is currently available for preorder with a 10% deposit.
This bike features an aluminum frame with a carbon fiber fork, as well as impressive components like a Sturmey Archer 3-speed rear hub transmission, Spanninga front and rear dynamo-powered lights, hydraulic disc brakes, Continental Urban puncture-resistant tires, and a Gates Carbon belt drive drivetrain.
Bastille
The Bastille’s folding mechanism is incredibly simple. Just flip one lever on the down tube and another on the handlebar stem. The down tube folds inward through a middle hinge, while the stem and handlebars are moved to the side. The seat post extends and folds back, the pedals fold in, and the seat stays and chain stays fold inward, taking the rear wheel with them.
Once folded, the bike measures 82 x 37 x 91 cm (32.3 x 14.6 x 35.8 in), with the wheels positioned beside each other for easy rolling. Whether folded or unfolded, the Bastille weighs approximately 15 kg (33 lb).
Currently, the Bastille is only available for purchase in France. It will retail for €2,590 (about US$2,742) and is expected to ship in mid-2024. You can catch a glimpse of the unfolding process at the 01:27 mark in the video below.
