Discover the Fate of the Broken-Hearted: Uncovering the Unlucky in Love, 1969 – Relationship Insights

Was society getting sadder? On 10 August 1969, the Observer initiated an exploration into ‘new aspects of unhappiness’ by interviewing individuals who were unfortunate in their love lives. One of the interviewees was Eve Taylor, a respected music manager aged 53, who had worked with renowned artists such as Sandie Shaw and Val Doonican. Despite her professional success, personal fulfillment remained elusive for Taylor: ‘Being in my current position, it’s incredibly difficult for me to find someone to connect with.’ After experiencing two ‘catastrophic’ marriages, she longed for someone to love her, but found herself mostly confined at home, dealing with the dramas of her clients while donning her nightwear. She expressed her lack of a confidant to share her own troubles with.

‘Why do I consistently develop feelings for the wrong men?’ lamented Sindy Herbert, a 25-year-old self-proclaimed ‘pretty girl’. Herbert’s romantic life was marred by chaos and heartbreak, exacerbated by her struggles with drug addiction and a stint in a psychiatric hospital. Contemplating a drastic change, she considered embracing a life as a nun or embarking on a journey to India ‘to immerse myself in Eastern culture and the world of smoking’.

‘I am drawn to wealth and indulgence, with a fondness for champagne,’ boldly declared Vikki de’Lambrey, a 20-year-old drag singer. Despite an array of admirers, a rented Rolls-Royce, luxurious furs, and dazzling gold lamé outfits, de’Lambrey professed that her current lifestyle was a lamentable waste: ‘The way I live is a tragic squandering of existence,’ she solemnly declared, vowing to end it all before the age of 26. Astonishingly, de’Lambrey would go on to flourish for another 15 flamboyant years, filled with gossip columns, courtroom appearances, scandals, and rumors of espionage connections, before meeting a mysterious fate through a fatal overdose.

Roger Wisbey, a 30-year-old owner of a men’s clothing boutique, cruised around in an MG sports car and regularly hosted magnificent parties. However, he couldn’t help but feel as though his parents’ idealized love story was unattainable for himself. Wisbey had a tendency to terminate his romantic entanglements in an unpleasant manner and was plagued with anxiety about facing a miserable middle age. Surprisingly, when Wisbey passed away in 2021 at the age of 82, his obituary hinted at the happy ending he had always feared would elude him: he was described as a ‘deeply adored husband’ survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren.
