Discover the Fascinating Design Similarities Between VW ID. GTI and Classic Oldsmobile

When it comes to the Volkswagen ID. GTI, its design is undeniably influenced by various GTIs from the past few decades, be it Golf, Polo, or other models. However, during a round-table discussion with the press, Andreas Mindt, VW’s Head of Design, shared some interesting origins of the ID. GTI’s lines.

One particularly unique connection to classic cars is an Oldsmobile, and an amusing story goes along with it. Mindt explained that the ID. GTI features a line, as well as several other VW models, that traces all the way back to the original Golf. This line is known as the “Tornado” line, a low line in the body that seamlessly flows into the wheel arches. But what’s the tornado connection? Actually, there isn’t one. The line was actually inspired by the original Oldsmobile Toronado, and the name “Tornado” came about due to a lost “o” in translation. Granted, the line on the ID. GTI is quite subtle, sitting at the top of the side stripes.

Mindt also mentioned another classic inspiration for the ID. GTI: the De Tomaso Mangusta. While the GTI doesn’t have a split hood or hatchback like the Mangusta, it does share similarities in the fenders. Mindt pointed out that the Mangusta has the appearance of big fender flares due to crisp arches that protrude from the body at the top, although they don’t actually extend further. A similar treatment can be seen on the ID. GTI, particularly noticeable on the front fenders. By avoiding excessive protrusion, aerodynamic turbulence is minimized. However, we can’t ignore the black extensions on the GTI, which we find particularly appealing, even if they may not contribute to aerodynamics.

So there you have it. The ID. GTI draws inspiration not just from classic VWs, but also from a De Tomaso and an Oldsmobile. Even without these connections, we still adore the ID. GTI and hope that VW will release the production version in the United States.
