ChatGPT is set to receive a major upgrade that will bring it closer to the level of artificial intelligence “assistants” such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, and Google’s voice assistant. According to the Guardian, OpenAI’s upcoming update will enable Plus and Enterprise subscribers to engage in voice conversations with ChatGPT, as well as interact with it using images. As CNBC puts it, “OpenAI’s ChatGPT can now ‘see, hear and speak,’ or, at the very least, understand spoken words, respond with a synthetic voice, and process images.”
OpenAI has proposed several applications for ChatGPT’s new functionalities. For example, you can take a photo of the contents of your refrigerator or pantry and ask ChatGPT for dinner suggestions, complete with step-by-step recipe instructions. Additionally, you can take a photo of your child’s math homework and request hints from the chatbot. TechCrunch and Mashable report that this update comes at a time when tech companies are racing to enhance their AI tools. Google plans to introduce a ChatGPT competitor called Gemini, Amazon is investing in the AI startup Anthropic, Microsoft has invested in OpenAI and added visual search to Bing search engine, and Meta has launched a tool for generating music with AI.
