For years, Google has been dedicated to simplifying the process of securing user accounts. As part of this effort, the company has been advocating for a shift from traditional passwords to passkeys and has even offered physical keys that adhere to FIDO standards for unlocking accounts. Today, Google has with new features to enhance compatibility with passkeys and traditional passwords.
Google’s updated Titan security keys include options for both USB-A and USB-C, and they continue to support NFC for unlocking accounts on compatible smartphones as well as through physical ports. The new key adheres to FIDO2 specifications for password-free sign-ins and has the capacity to store up to 250 passkeys.
Capitalizing on this update, Google is urging users to adopt passkeys to safeguard their Google accounts. During the setup process, users will be prompted to create a passkey and store it on the Titan key, replacing the need for traditional passwords. Additionally, users will be required to set up a PIN to complement the security key for unlocking their Google account. It’s important to note that the Titan key is not limited to Google accounts and can be used for any supported account. Furthermore, it can function as a two-factor authentication device alongside traditional passwords.
The new Titan keys are now available for purchase on the Google Store at the same price point as their predecessors. The USB-A model is priced at $30, while the USB-C key costs $35.
