The quirkiest reasons why motorists sell their cars have been revealed by Auto Trader, the leading marketplace for new and used vehicles.
While those who frequently buy used cars may be familiar with common statements such as ‘reluctant sale’ or ‘new baby forces sale’, some sellers prefer to add a touch of creativity when listing their vehicles.
According to Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, the emotions expressed in these car advertisements reflect the significance owners attach to their vehicles. She stated, “Cars hold personal value for millions of Brits, evoking memories and experiences, whether it’s their first car or one they currently rely on. Life changes like a new job, house, expanding family, or breakups often necessitate parting with beloved vehicles. It’s no surprise then that Brits’ love, emotion, and personality shine through in their car ads.”

Auto Trader highlighted a case where a son was unimpressed with a car gifted to him by a family member. The seller, advertising a sporty black Audi A3 Sportback, wrote, “Advertised on behalf of son who works away as he has no manners and is ungrateful.”
At some point in their lives, many drivers have to sell a car they enjoy to meet other financial needs. Auto Trader shared a story of a driver selling their Mercedes-Benz GLE Class SUV to fund a new business and escape their annoying colleagues. The seller stated, “Selling my pride and joy as [I’m] fed up working for and with idiots, so starting my own business.”
However, not everyone is sentimental about parting with their vehicles. Some sellers can’t wait to get rid of their cars. One seller amusingly wrote, “Would ideally suit some driveway mechanic who’s good with a set of spanners, take it home for the kids to play with, or just buy it to annoy your neighbors. Suitable for multiple purposes, ideal for picnics when you break down. For more info, contact Dodgey Dave.”
