Ryanair and Aer Lingus are expanding their presence at Cork Airport, the second-busiest airport in Ireland. Aer Lingus recently announced a winter expansion, and here is what you need to know about the new routes. Ryanair has announced five new winter routes from Cork Airport. These routes include Barcelona, Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Paris (Beauvais), Seville in Spain, and Treviso near Venice in Italy. Barcelona and Treviso are already available during the summer, while Fuerteventura will operate on a weekly basis starting from November 2. Paris will have three flights per week, and Seville will have two flights per week, both starting from October 29. With these additions, Ryanair will operate a total of 23 routes from Cork. The airline also plans to increase frequencies on winter routes to Faro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Malaga, Rome, and Tenerife. Ryanair expects to carry around 2.3 million of the 2.7 million passengers passing through Cork Airport this year. Aer Lingus, on the other hand, offers fewer flights from Cork but has been expanding its presence there since the pandemic. It will introduce a new route to Lyon from December 23 to the end of March, which is likely to appeal to skiers. The airline will also increase its seat offering by almost 37% at Cork Airport, with the return of winter routes to Tenerife (from October 28) and Malaga (operating during Christmas and the February mid-term break). Additionally, its Cork to Lanzarote route will have double the number of flights per week during the peak winter travel period. Winter airport schedules usually start at the end of October and run until the end of March, although specific routes may have different start dates. Cork Airport experienced a 12% increase in passenger numbers last month compared to last year, making it the busiest August since 2008. Ryanair’s investment includes permanently basing a third Boeing 737 at the airport, creating over 30 new high-paid jobs for pilots, cabin crew, and engineers. Dublin, Shannon, and Ireland West airports are also seeing a rebound in travel. Ireland West (Knock) had its busiest ever month in August with over 100,000 passengers, Shannon saw its highest passenger numbers in a decade in the first half of 2023, and Dublin Airport is on track to have its busiest year ever. Dublin Airport, in particular, had over 3.4 million passengers last month, with a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Both business and leisure travel demand remains high, and seat sales are available from Ryanair and Aer Lingus to celebrate the new routes and offer discounts on select European routes.
