  • The stress she faced at the time contributed to her mental state

Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen opens up about her struggles with mental health during her early years as a model. She reveals that she once considered jumping from a height due to the suffocating and panic-inducing environments she faced in studios.

In an interview with CBS correspondent Lee Cowan, Bündchen shares, “You know, I was in tunnels. I couldn’t breathe. And then I started being in studios, and I felt, like, suffocated.”

The supermodel recalls her fear of elevators, causing her to climb up the stairs to her 9th-floor apartment. She describes the feeling of not being able to breathe, even with open windows, and the desire to escape such a suffocating existence.

Cowan asks Bündchen if she genuinely contemplated jumping, to which she responds, “Yeah. For, like, a second.”

Bündchen attributes her mental health struggles during that time to the immense stress she was under. She discusses her unhealthy habits, such as consuming mocha frappuccinos for breakfast, smoking cigarettes, drinking a bottle of wine at night, lack of sleep, and constant travel and work.

“Like, I basically burned out my adrenal glands and my nervous system couldn’t take it anymore,” Bündchen explains.

In her 2018 memoir, Bündchen had previously mentioned having suicidal thoughts. She reflects on that dark period, expressing the urge to reach out to her younger self and reassure her that everything will be okay. She reveals her fleeting contemplation of jumping as a result of feeling trapped and overwhelmed.

Bündchen also discusses her highly publicized divorce from ex-husband Tom Brady. While disappointed, she expresses her desire for happiness for both of them and acknowledges that sometimes people grow together in their 20s and sometimes they grow apart.

Representatives for Bündchen have not yet responded to a request for comment from Insider.
