NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints’ tight end, Foster Moreau, struggled to contain his emotions after failing to catch a potential game-tying pass in a narrow 31-24 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Moreau, a native of New Orleans, was open in the corner of the end zone but couldn’t secure the pass from Derek Carr on a crucial third-and-6 with just 30 seconds remaining.
“Yeah, you know, it’s tough,” expressed Moreau. “In front of everyone I’ve ever known. It’s a dark place to be. It’s the National Football League. It doesn’t come down to just one play, but it does. The team fought hard, as we always do, but it’s just unacceptable. It’s pathetic.”
Following the failed pass, the Saints were unable to convert on fourth down, effectively handing the victory to the Jaguars. Moreau remained on the bench with his head in his hands, receiving consolation from his teammates.
In reflecting on the play, Moreau acknowledged that he had cut his route too short but believed the throw and read were correct.
“Short week, that’s a lack of focus, lack of concentration. It’s unacceptable,” he admitted.
Running back Alvin Kamara approached Moreau, hugged him, and escorted him to the locker room after the game.
Despite the disappointment, it’s crucial to note that Moreau, who battled Hodgkin lymphoma during the offseason, is a spokesperson for the NFL’s “Crucial Catch” campaign, advocating for early cancer screenings. In support of the campaign, the Saints had the end zone painted with its slogan that evening.
Kamara reminded Moreau that the loss pales in comparison to what he went through off the field during his cancer battle.
“There will be more opportunities for bigger plays,” said Kamara. “I told him that he’s blessed for what he’s overcome. This isn’t a big deal. … I’m not worried about Fos missing that play. Frankly, we shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place, where we have to rely on that catch. We’re professionals.”
Carr acknowledged that fans might direct their anger at Moreau, but he emphasized that the outcome of the game wasn’t solely determined by one play.
“As teammates and as family, our job is to support him,” stated Carr. “I’ve been in that moment where you miss a throw or make a bad interception, and you feel like everyone hates you. Our responsibility as teammates is to rally around each other and keep pushing. The way our teammates reacted demonstrates that we have a strong bond. I’ve seen instances where everyone starts pointing fingers in moments like this, but I don’t believe in that. There were numerous things we could’ve done differently to prevent that situation altogether.”
