A highly anticipated Highlander reboot starring the talented Henry Cavill is currently in development and has the potential to kickstart a successful franchise, according to the film’s director.
The Highlander franchise has captivated audiences since its inception in 1986 with the release of a fantasy film featuring Christopher Lambert. Over the years, it has expanded to include four films, two live-action TV series, original novels, and more.
A remake of the original film has been in the works since 2008, with renowned director Chad Stalheski joining the project in 2016. Reports in 2021 suggested that Henry Cavill was in talks to lead the reboot, although updates on its progress have been scarce.
However, in a recent interview, director Chad Stalheski confirmed that the new Highlander film is indeed in development and could potentially propel Henry Cavill’s career following his departure from The Witcher.
When asked on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about Cavill’s involvement and the film’s progress, Stalheski responded, “I believe we have some fantastic elements in place. The challenge lies in the fact that when your tagline is ‘There can only be one’, you can’t eliminate every character in the first installment.
“Allow me to share this with you first. Our story incorporates many beloved characters and elements from the TV shows, while also functioning as a prequel and setting the stage for ‘The Gathering’ [a pivotal episode from the original series]. This gives us the opportunity to expand the franchise.”
Stalheski drew a parallel between Highlander and his own successful John Wick franchise, emphasizing that he never intended for John Wick to become a series unless there was a compelling enough idea.
“Highlander, on the other hand, possesses a vast and captivating mythology. The concept of having immortals from various time periods, nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds fight for survival, grappling with the weight of immortality itself, is incredibly exciting to me.”
In addition, Stalheski highlighted the creative challenge involved, stating, “I don’t want to be the one who messes this up.”
Last year, Henry Cavill announced his departure from another popular fantasy franchise, Netflix’s The Witcher.
Cavill portrayed the demon hunter Geralt of Rivia in the acclaimed series, which is based on the beloved video game. After three seasons, Cavill will be succeeded by Liam Hemsworth.
Speaking recently, The Witcher director Marc Jobst suggested that the demanding nature of filming the series may have influenced Cavill’s decision to leave.
“Look, Henry has given everything to this role over three seasons. These shows are incredibly demanding to make. Henry performs every single stunt, insisting on using his own hands even for close-up shots. It takes its toll on the actor, so after three seasons, I understand if he feels he has accomplished what he set out to do. I trust his judgment.”
