In the realm of national security concerns surrounding the Chinese-owned video-sharing app, TikTok, Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has expressed his inclination towards a potential ban if he were to be elected.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, DeSantis stated, “I am inclined to not want TikTok in the United States. I think it’s creating a security vulnerability for us. I think they are mining a lot of data.”
However, DeSantis clarified that he would not go as far as implementing legislation similar to the RESTRICT Act. This bipartisan bill, introduced in March, aims to grant the federal government greater authority in regulating and prohibiting technology linked to foreign adversaries, including TikTok.
DeSantis expressed his concern about intrusive surveillance, stating, “At the end of the day, I don’t want Big Brother to be getting into everybody’s apps. It’s about vulnerabilities to our country.”
In an effort to mitigate the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) within Florida, DeSantis signed a bill earlier this year that prohibits the use of TikTok on government and school servers and devices in the state. He remarked, “We think whatever utility that these applications have is clearly outweighed by the benefit that the CCP gets from data mining and being able to collect information.”
As the presidential race unfolds, DeSantis continues to advocate for the safeguarding of national security interests.
