DeSantis Extends Helping Hand to California, Offers Assistance with Hurricane Hilary “In Any Way Possible”

As Hurricane Hilary approaches Southern California, Florida Republican governor Ron DeSantis has offered to assist his Democratic rival Gov. Gavin Newsom with storm preparedness and relief efforts.

“Hurricane Hilary is projected to make landfall as a tropical storm,” DeSantis announced on X on Saturday morning. “We stand ready to help the people of California in any way we can.”

At the time of publication, there has been no official response from Newsom. Fox News Digital has reached out to the governor’s press office for a comment.

During an interview in Manchester, New Hampshire, DeSantis stated, “We have significant experience in dealing with tropical weather events, and we’ve offered our assistance to California. Despite political disagreements, when it comes to situations like this, we should come together as Americans and offer our help.”

California is under its first-ever Tropical Storm Watch as state officials mobilize to prepare for the storm’s arrival. Over 14 million Americans in the coastal region of Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego, are at risk of catastrophic flooding caused by a year’s worth of rain in just a few days.

Hurricane Hilary rapidly intensified in the Pacific Ocean, going from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane within 48 hours, according to FOX Weather. Although it is expected to weaken upon making landfall in Mexico, California will still experience heavy rain and the most severe impacts on Sunday and Monday.

Moisture from Hurricane Hilary is causing flash flood warnings in the Southwest U.S., as shown on water vapor satellite images, according to FOX Forecast Center senior meteorologist Jordan Overton.

Newsom urges California residents to stay vigilant and prepare for flooding and power outages while following the instructions of local authorities.

“We should never underestimate Mother Nature’s power. California is working with federal and local governments to support communities in preparing for this unprecedented storm,” Newsom said in a news release. “Listen to warnings from local authorities, be prepared, and stay informed.”

Governor Newsom has traveled to Southern California and will remain there throughout the storm, according to his office.

DeSantis and Newsom have engaged in social media spats as they are frequently discussed as potential future presidential candidates. While DeSantis is currently running for the Republican nomination, Newsom has chosen not to challenge President Biden, who is seeking re-election in the 2024 Democratic primary.

Both governors have accepted a debate challenge from Fox News host Sean Hannity, but the time and location have not yet been determined.
