DeSantis Aims to Strengthen Pro-Israel Image through Criticizing Biden’s Policies

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida strongly criticized the Biden administration’s policies on Israel, describing them as “disgraceful.” In an effort to showcase his pro-Israel stance and appeal to evangelical voters, DeSantis used the Christians United for Israel Summit in Washington as a platform to emphasize his unwavering support for Israel’s claim to Jerusalem and his opposition to the boycott-Israel movement, which he believes promotes prejudice against Jewish people.

The event, which coincided with President Biden’s invitation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House and a scheduled meeting with Isaac Herzog, the Israeli president, also featured two other Republican presidential candidates. During his speech, DeSantis expressed his view that focusing all criticism on the only Jewish state while disregarding other issues amounts to antisemitism.

Interestingly, DeSantis did not specifically mention the progressive Democrats who plan to boycott a speech by President Herzog to Congress. Nevertheless, he capitalized on the opportunity to reaffirm his staunch support for Israel and criticize White House policies. This aligns with a common conservative narrative that portrays Democrats who criticize Israel as anti-Zionist or antisemitic.

It is a challenging moment for both parties, as incidents of antisemitism have been on the rise in recent years. For instance, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democratic presidential candidate, faced accusations of antisemitism and racism when he falsely claimed that the Covid-19 virus was designed to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. Additionally, House Democrats have swiftly distanced themselves from Representative Rashida Tlaib’s characterization of Israel as a “racist state” at a progressive conference. Tlaib, the leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, advocates for a shift in the discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing human rights and endorsing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement to pressure Israel into ending its occupation of the West Bank.

To clarify her remarks, Tlaib stated that she does not view Israel as a racist nation, but rather criticizes Prime Minister Netanyahu’s right-wing government for engaging in discriminatory policies. In contrast, DeSantis, amidst enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation, rejected the idea of a two-state solution and condemned attempts to impose a radical left-wing agenda on Israeli policy through economic and business pressure.

DeSantis highlighted that Israelis live under constant threat of terrorism and defended their right to protect their own people. He criticized those who criticize Israel from the “cheap seats” without understanding the challenges faced by the country.

Overall, Governor DeSantis used the platform to assert his pro-Israel stance and criticize the Biden administration’s policies, aiming to appeal to evangelical voters and position himself as a strong advocate for Israel’s interests.
