Several protestors successfully obstructed all eastbound lanes on the Ventura (134) Freeway at the Golden State (5) interchange in Glendale on Wednesday evening.
At 9 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a SigAlert for the eastbound Ventura Freeway at Central Avenue, stating that all lanes would be blocked for approximately three hours until the protestors could be removed from the freeway.
The SigAlert was issued in response to multiple big rigs and individuals seen blocking all eastbound lanes on the freeway, as reported by KCAL.
The protests began at Burbank City Hall and later extended to the interchange of the Ventura and Golden State freeways, as well as the Hollywood (101) Freeway at Vineland Avenue.
Signs placed on the freeway displayed messages such as “Adam Schiff Don’t Ignore Us” and “Open the Road to Life,” according to KCAL.
The CHP has closed the transition road from the eastbound Ventura Freeway to the northbound Golden State Freeway.
The protest was organized by a group named “Rally for Life” to voice their discontent towards Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, as reported by KCAL and the Burbank Police Department. The group alleges that Schiff has not taken sufficient action to end the blockade of the Lachin Corridor, a mountain road connecting Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
On December 12, Azerbaijan initiated the blockade of the Lachin Corridor following a series of conflicts along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border in September, resulting in a death toll of at least 200. This blockade has prevented around 120,000 civilians from receiving essential aid, supplies, and external assistance.
Schiff was among the authors of a congressional resolution condemning the blockade and urging the United States and the international community to call upon the United Nations Security Council and other relevant international bodies to investigate any potential war crimes committed by Azerbaijani forces.
The Nagorno Karabakh Republic is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, although Armenians refer to it as Artsakh.
