Conservatives and Republicans must have been delighted by the writers strike over the summer, as it kept the alleged comedians, who play a crucial role in the Democratic messaging and morale machine, on the sidelines from May to September. They missed the opportunity to revel in Trump indictments and ridicule the first two presidential debates (including Donald Trump’s absence). So, when the strike finally ended, the usual parade of unfunny Republican-bashing began.
Do they mock the current president? Not as much, because he’s a Democrat and they still see him as their hope to prevent a second term for Trump. Joe Biden only comes up with old-fogey jokes, as it’s a safe topic. Even Democrats think he’s too old for the job. As an example, Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about Joe Biden’s encounter with Alexa on Amazon Prime Day: “Joe Biden spent his October Prime Day trying to figure out where the hell this woman Alexa who keeps yelling at him is hiding.”
However, it’s more common for Republicans to be the target of jokes, being portrayed as a terrible mess.
When House Republicans nominated Rep. Steve Scalise (R.-La.) to be speaker, Jimmy Kimmel joked that they took a break from their imaginary impeachment of Joe Biden. He went on to say, “Scalise beat out Jim Jordan in a closed-door session and will now spend a night in the fantasy suite with Matt Gaetz to see how they hit it off.” This is a reference to the “The Bachelor” and its scenes of off-screen intimacy. It’s perfectly fine to make homosexual jokes, as long as they’re targeting those conservatives they find “icky.”
Stephen Colbert on CBS summarized the situation by congratulating Steve Scalise but also pointing out that the position of speaker is considered to be one of the worst jobs in the world, comparing it to emptying the Porta-Potties at a chili cook-off.
Furthermore, Kimmel even made a joke about Scalise being shot on a softball field in 2017, insinuating that it somehow made him a leftist advocate for gun control. He said, “And when he recovered and came back to Congress, he knew that nothing like what happened to him should ever happen again. So as his first act, he introduced House Resolution 2481, that required all baseball players to carry AK-47s in their protective cups.” Interestingly, Kimmel never made fun of former Rep. Gabby Giffords after she was shot because she’s a Democrat and has become a celebrated advocate for gun control.
Now, Stephen Colbert is once again inviting congressional Democrats onto his show to bash Republicans. During a recent episode, gun control advocate Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) accused Republicans of being indifferent towards school shootings. Colbert said nothing in response. Later, Colbert interviewed Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who has recovered from a stroke, and asked about the publicization of his health issues. Fetterman had been absent from office for two months due to depression. While Fetterman attacked Fox News, Democrat journalists were worried about his absence.
Colbert then praised Fetterman’s social media game and asked if it’s awkward to run into people that he has mocked during an online meme battle. He remarks, “But then you have to see these people in the cafeteria!”
These comedians are now trying to make up for lost time by being the Democrats’ biggest cheerleaders. However, their jokes fail to resonate with the general audience, as they come across as unfunny hyper-partisans.
