Democratic Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Dan Goldman, and Judy Chu will be writing a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, urging them to revoke the invitation extended to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to testify before the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. A source familiar with the matter has confirmed this information to CBS News.
The request comes after Kennedy made false claims over the weekend alleging that COVID-19 was specifically targeting certain ethnic groups while sparing Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. This conspiracy theory sparked accusations of antisemitism and racism. Despite this controversy, Kennedy is still scheduled to testify before the House panel on Thursday regarding social media companies limiting his anti-vaccine rhetoric.
In their letter, the Democratic lawmakers wrote, “Mr. Kennedy has repeatedly and recently spread vile and dangerous antisemitic and anti-Asian conspiracy theories that tarnish his credibility as a witness and must not be legitimized with his appearance before the U.S. Congress, nor given the platform of an official committee hearing to spread his baseless and discriminatory views.”
Responding to the situation, McCarthy stated on Monday that he disagrees with Kennedy’s statements but believes that censoring him is not the solution. Wasserman Schultz countered by stating that no one is censoring Kennedy, but granting him a platform is irresponsible, especially given the incendiary and inaccurate nature of his remarks and the rise of hatred towards Jewish and Asian communities in the country.
Kennedy, known for his anti-vaccine stance and conspiracy theories, has been disavowed by his own family members following his latest comments. His sister, Kerry Kennedy, posted on Twitter condemning his remarks, and his cousin Joe Kennedy III also expressed strong opposition to his statements.
The hearing on Thursday will primarily focus on censorship and will feature other witnesses such as Louisiana Special Assistant Attorney General D. John Sauer and a journalist from Breitbart News.
