- A video depicting a passenger listening to a Delta gate agent auctioning travel vouchers in exchange for seats has gone viral.
- According to the video, the gate agent can be heard offering travel vouchers of up to $1,200.
- A Delta spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Dot that travel vouchers are offered when flights are overbooked.
A viral video capturing a Delta Airlines gate agent conducting an auction for cash vouchers, enticing passengers to give up their seats, has gained significant attention online. People are hailing it as a favorable deal.
The video, shared by a TikTok user named Simone Aldredge, showcases her husband at John F. Kennedy International Airport awaiting a flight. The video was initially posted on July 10 and recently regained popularity with over three million views.
In the background, a gate agent can be heard making announcements, inviting passengers to exchange their seats for vouchers.
“Please see me at the podium, this time I’m offering $700, ladies and gentlemen,” the agent can be heard saying in the video. However, there were no takers, prompting the agent to increase the offer, as shared by Aldredge in the video.
The agent eventually raised the price to $1,100, specifically targeting passengers heading to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The offer was later bumped up to $1,200.
“You’ll receive your compensation in the form of a gift card — American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Amazon, Best Buy, Airbnb, just to name a few. It’s your choice,” explained the agent, who goes by the name Karl, according to the video.
Delta spokesperson Drake Castañeda confirmed to the Daily Dot that the airline offers travel vouchers when flights are overbooked.
Airlines often oversell flights to maximize revenue, ensuring each seat is filled, even if some passengers don’t show up for their flights.
Many users online expressed their willingness to accept the offer, considering the offered compensation worthy of missing the flight.
“My husband and I received $1,400 for a one-hour delay to ATL. Best investment ever,” wrote one user, referring to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Another user commented, “We received $1,200 each, plus hotel, dinner, and airport vouchers once. It’s worth it if you’re able to do it!”
While a few users expressed skepticism, claiming such offers never happen where they live, most users are intrigued by Delta’s approach.
“Why do US airlines always oversell flights? I don’t think this happens in Australia at all,” one user pondered.
Delta and Aldredge did not respond immediately to a comment request sent outside regular office hours.
