Decades-Old Alleged Sexual Abuse by Teacher Prompts Lawsuit Against El Segundo Unified

A lawsuit has been filed against the El Segundo Unified School District, claiming that a man was sexually abused by a social studies teacher more than 20 years ago during his time in middle school. The abuse allegedly occurred both on a school trip to Washington, D.C. and at the school itself. The plaintiff, identified as John Doe 7091, has filed the lawsuit in Torrance Superior Court, seeking damages for sexual battery, harassment, negligence, and negligent supervision and retention.

The lawsuit emphasizes that the ESUSD had a responsibility to supervise its employees, including the teacher in question, and to ensure the well-being of students like Doe. The plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages for the harm he suffered.

In response to the lawsuit, the ESUSD released a statement acknowledging the lawsuit and expressing their commitment to take all allegations of misconduct seriously. However, they declined to comment on the specifics of the case due to its ongoing legal nature and involvement of a district employee.

The lawsuit states that Doe began attending El Segundo Middle School in 2000-2001 and met one of the social studies teachers during school meetings in preparation for the school-sponsored trip to Washington, D.C. Although Doe was not in the teacher’s class, she took a keen interest in him and started corresponding with him via email.

The suit alleges that the teacher manipulated Doe by befriending him and making him feel special. She complimented his intelligence, told him he was the most mature student in the school, and began encouraging explicit sexual conversations. Furthermore, she repeatedly warned Doe not to discuss the grooming or sexual assaults.

The abuse continued during the trip to Washington, D.C., where the teacher intentionally arranged for Doe to sit next to her on the plane and assaulted him on multiple occasions, according to the lawsuit. The abuse also took place in the teacher’s classroom, her car, and her apartment in Hermosa Beach. At the end of the school year, she even wrote a love message in Doe’s yearbook.

Despite transferring to another school district due to rumors surrounding him and the teacher, Doe claims that the abuse continued until the spring/summer of 2003.
