Alejandro Martinez, a recruit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, tragically passed away after a courageous eight-month battle with severe injuries sustained from being struck by a vehicle driving in the wrong direction during a training exercise with his fellow sheriff’s academy colleagues. The LASD announced the heartbreaking news on Saturday.
The incident occurred on November 16, 2022, in Whittier while Martinez was running alongside his academy colleagues. He ultimately lost his life on Friday at UCLA Medical Center in Westwood.
KTLA5 reports that Martinez was 27 years old.
Surrounded by loved ones, Sheriff Robert Luna, and members of the department offering support to his family, Alejandro has now found eternal rest, as stated by the department. Unfortunately, he was unable to fulfill his noble purpose of helping others. We extend our deepest condolences to Alejandro’s family, friends, and fellow academy classmates. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts and never be forgotten. No words can adequately express our gratitude to everyone who aided and continues to support us, lightening the burden of that fateful day.
We would like to express our gratitude to the California Highway Patrol Santa Fe Springs Office, CHP Southern Division Investigative Services, and M.A.I.T. – Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team for conducting a thorough joint investigation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau. We also extend our thanks to the numerous Los Angeles County Fire Department stations, as well as the multitude of healthcare professionals who provided exceptional medical care.
The collision resulted in injuries to 25 recruits, including Martinez, according to sheriff’s officials.
The individual who struck the cadets, Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, a 22-year-old resident of Diamond Bar, claimed to have fallen asleep at the wheel during an interview in 2022. He was promptly arrested following the crash and initially booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. However, Gutierrez was released the following day after authorities stated that further extensive investigation was required to fully understand the complexities of the case.
