Death of LA Sheriff’s Recruit Injured in 2022 Wrong-Way Crash

Alejandro Martinez, a recruit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, tragically passed away after being struck by a wrong-way vehicle during training alongside his colleagues. He fought for his life for eight months but ultimately succumbed to his severe injuries at UCLA Medical Center in Westwood.

In a statement released by the LASD, they expressed their sorrow over Alejandro’s untimely death and extended their condolences to his family, friends, and fellow recruits from Academy Class #464. They emphasized that Alejandro’s memory will always be kept alive in their hearts, and they thanked everyone who provided support during this difficult time.

The accident occurred when an SUV unexpectedly veered into the group of approximately 75 law enforcement trainees during their morning run near the sheriff’s STARS Explorer Academy training center in Whittier. The recruits were running in columns when the southbound vehicle crossed over to their side of the road, causing multiple injuries.

At the time of the incident, 25 recruits, including Martinez, were injured. The driver, Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. However, he was later released due to the need for further investigation regarding the complexity of the case.
