David Weiss, a Trump appointee, chosen as special counsel for investigations pertaining to Hunter Biden

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland made a significant announcement on Friday. He revealed that David Weiss, the federal prosecutor in Delaware who has been leading the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden, will be appointed as a special counsel in the case. This decision comes after Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump in 2018, requested to be named special counsel earlier in the week. Garland, considering the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the matter, concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint Weiss. The announcement coincided with federal prosecutors disclosing an impasse in plea negotiations with Hunter Biden’s lawyers, indicating that the case may go to trial.

It is worth noting that the White House was not given advance notice of Garland’s announcement. Last month, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges after an initial plea agreement fell through. However, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, expressed confidence that his client will eventually have resolution and move forward successfully.

Garland has previously appointed two other special counsels. One was Jack Smith, tasked with investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents and the former president’s role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election. The other was Robert Hur, who investigated classified documents found in President Joe Biden’s office and residence.

Despite his new role as special counsel, Weiss will continue to serve as U.S. Attorney for Delaware. This development marks another significant step in the ongoing investigation involving Hunter Biden.
