David Malachowski Memorial Concert Scheduled in NYC

The upcoming concert in Manhattan is set to honor the late and accomplished guitarist, music director, and Times Union contributor, David Malachowski, who sadly passed away at the age of 67 in September. Taking place on Sunday, July 23, at The Cutting Room, a renowned club on East 32nd Street, the concert will feature performances by musicians who had the privilege of collaborating with Malachowski, including members of the original cast of the iconic musical “Rent.”

To attend the concert, interested individuals can purchase tickets online in advance for $25, or on the day of the show for $35, with additional ticketing fees and a minimum spending requirement of $25 on food and drinks. To ensure a memorable tribute, the evening will showcase a diverse repertoire of rock, country, and blues songs that David Malachowski had passionately performed throughout his illustrious career, as well as some of his original compositions. Notable artists joining the lineup include Anthony Rapp and Daphne Rubin-Vega, known for their roles in “Rent,” talented keyboardist Dan Weiss, esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta, renowned bass player Tony Levin, Ann Klein on guitar, violinist Lorenza Ponce, and other special guests yet to be announced. The event has been thoughtfully organized by Lindsay Malachowski, David’s daughter. In the spirit of her father’s generosity, a portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society, a cause that held personal significance for David Malachowski, while the rest will support the talented musicians.

David Malachowski hailed from Schenectady, New York, and discovered his passion for the guitar at the tender age of 8. He journeyed from performing in local bands to becoming the music director for the legendary country superstar Shania Twain during the mid-1990s. His talents also led him to join pit bands for beloved Broadway musicals such as “Rent” and “Mamma Mia,” enabling him to tour globally. Recognized for his signature long, flowing hair and his preference for snug jeans on his lean frame, Malachowski embodied the essence of a guitar hero. Despite his undeniable rockstar persona, he remained a warm and humble friend to those who knew him personally. David often summarized his life as a harmonious blend of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, intertwined with the genres of country, blues, and Broadway, all united by his beloved instrument – the guitar.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Malachowski also dabbled as a music columnist and critic. His career in this field began with the former Albany-based alternative weekly publication, Metroland, in the late 1990s before transitioning to write for the Times Union. Over the course of nearly two decades, his name appeared in the Times Union more than a staggering 1,300 times, thanks to his insightful articles and mentions of concerts and shows he was involved in. While residing in and around the Capital Region for the majority of his life, David Malachowski relocated to the vibrant city of New York in 2013.

Tragically, David Malachowski’s passing was attributed to heart failure, with a direct correlation to the cancer treatment he endured as a teenager, as confirmed by his daughter. It is with deep reverence and admiration that this concert seeks to honor David Malachowski’s extraordinary life and enduring contributions to the world of music.
