  • “He had this incredible style with his massive trousers and slim figure,” Murphy commented on Bowie’s look.

Cillian Murphy revealed that Christopher Nolan sent him photos of David Bowie as references for the look of his character in “Oppenheimer.”

In an interview with MTV Movies, Murphy explained, “We closely collaborated with our costume designer to create the outfits, focusing on capturing the silhouette. Bowie’s emaciated but cool appearance served as inspiration.”

“Oppenheimer,” directed and written by Nolan, features Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned physicist credited with developing the atomic bomb.

This high-stakes thriller is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It explores the decision-making process behind the first atomic bomb and its consequences.

To portray the intense character of Oppenheimer, Murphy underwent significant weight loss. In addition to his physical appearance, Murphy donned a porkpie hat and loose, yet tailored outfits.

Interestingly, the costumes were inspired by David Bowie’s Thin White Duke persona and the aesthetics of his “Young Americans” album from 1975.

Murphy shared, “Chris sent me daily shots of Bowie during different periods, like the Thin White Duke era and ‘Young Americans’ time. I admired Bowie’s emaciated look and his incredible style. So we incorporated that into some of Oppenheimer’s attire.”

Murphy’s physical transformation for “Oppenheimer” has generated significant buzz prior to the film’s release.

In an interview with the New York Times, he explained, “I enjoy using my body for acting, and capturing Oppenheimer’s unique physicality and silhouette was important to me.”

Murphy added, “I had to lose a considerable amount of weight, and we worked closely with the costume department to achieve his slim and almost emaciated look. Oppenheimer had strikingly bright eyes, so we also focused on perfecting his expressions and silhouette before filming began.”

The actor also shared with The Guardian that during the shooting, he was “running on crazy energy” and reached a point where he wasn’t concerned about food or anything else.
