DAA Chairman Raises Concerns over Potential ‘Mass Cancellations,’ Calls on Taoiseach for Urgent Action on Dublin Airport Night Flights

Basil Geoghegan recently wrote a letter to Leo Varadkar expressing his concern about an important issue regarding Dublin Airport. Fingal County Council had issued an enforcement order to DAA for allegedly breaching planning conditions related to the new North Runway. However, DAA was able to obtain a temporary High Court stay on the order, which would have resulted in a reduction of night flights. DAA disputes the council’s decision and denies the alleged planning breach.

In his letter, Mr. Geoghegan emphasized the potential negative consequences of enforcing a reduction in night-time flights. He explained that it would lead to mass flight cancellations for passengers and cargo operators. He urged An Bord Pleanála (ABP) to make a prompt decision on the appeal, as it is crucial to the enforcement action.

Mr. Geoghegan clarified that DAA is not seeking special treatment but instead wants to highlight the critical national interest at stake. He requested that ABP expedite the appeal process in order to reach a final decision on the matter as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson from DAA confirmed that Mr. Geoghegan had written to the Taoiseach, noting that DAA is a commercial semi-state company mandated to grow Dublin Airport and support Ireland’s international connectivity. They emphasized the significant impact that the unresolved issue could have on Dublin Airport, its customers, and the Irish economy. The chair of DAA had previously raised these concerns in appearances before the Oireachtas.

The case has been with An Bord Pleanála for almost a year, and DAA emphasizes the importance of resolving it in the national interest.

The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, has yet to comment on the matter.

In related news, following complaints from local residents about increased noise levels since the opening of the North Runway in August 2022, the Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA) directed DAA to install permanent noise-measuring systems in 23 community locations by August 24, 2024. Currently, 15 of these systems are operational and accessible for public viewing through Dublin Airport’s Webtrak flight monitoring system. The data collected from these systems is used to validate noise models for aircraft noise assessments. The remaining eight systems will be installed by DAA within the next year.
