Before landing the role of Miranda Hobbes, Cynthia Nixon attempted to audition for the iconic character of Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City.”

During the “And Just Like That… The Writers Room” podcast, Nixon, alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristin Davis, revealed that she was initially called in to read for the role of Carrie.

“They brought me in to audition for Carrie. I auditioned and they were like, ‘Yeah, not so much,'” shared Nixon during the podcast.

Despite being turned down for the lead role, Nixon expressed her eagerness to be part of the series, as it seemed there could be other roles to fill.

“At the time, I thought there were more than just four women. It felt more like seven,” Nixon added. “Being a show set in New York, this was a rare opportunity. There must be a role for me. Couldn’t they consider me for someone else?”

Unlike popular shows such as “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” which were primarily filmed in Los Angeles, Nixon believed “Sex and the City” presented a unique chance to act in New York.

Eventually, Nixon was given the opportunity to audition for the role of Miranda.

“Before auditioning for Miranda, my manager of many years suggested, ‘Maybe you could comb your hair. Maybe you could wear some lipstick,'” Nixon shared. She added that the show’s producers put her through multiple auditions.

Nixon wasn’t the only “Sex and the City” cast member who tried out for the role of Carrie. During the podcast, Kristin Davis, who portrays Charlotte York, revealed that she was also asked to audition for Carrie despite feeling it wasn’t the right fit for her.

“I remember one line in the script that said, ‘Carrie has the body of Heather Locklear and the mind of Dorothy Parker,'” Davis recalled. “I thought it was adorable, but I couldn’t see myself in that part. I mean, what were they thinking?”

This podcast episode coincides with the 25th anniversary celebration of the “Sex and the City” cast.

The second season of the spinoff series “And Just Like That” is set to premiere on June 22. The sequel follows the lives and friendships of the original characters as they navigate their 50s.
