MANILA, Philippines—College of St. Benilde has strengthened its coaching staff by enlisting the services of Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman as a consultant.
Toroman, a familiar figure in Philippine basketball, previously served as the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas from 2009 to 2011, and has also coached teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) such as Petron and Barako Bull.
With Toroman on board, he will provide guidance to the Blazers who finished as finalists in the NCAA Season 98, along with head coach Charles Tiu.
Tiu expressed his excitement about working with Toroman again, stating, “I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s coming full circle for me. I’ve always wanted to work with him again because he’s like a father figure to me.”
“There is still so much for us to learn and improve upon, and having a coach of his caliber come here to train us is truly beneficial,” Tiu added.
Tiu previously served as an assistant coach under Toroman during their time with Barako Bull.
Tiu hopes that Toroman’s addition will finally end the Blazers’ 22-year title drought, especially with reigning NCAA MVP Will Gozum returning for Season 99. The team has also acquired notable talents such as Tony Ynot from San Beda and Allen Liwag from Emilio Aguinaldo College during the offseason.
