Cristiano Ronaldo showcased his brilliance once again, scoring a remarkable late goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Portugal over Iceland in their Euro 2024 qualifying Group J match. This win maintains Portugal’s perfect record in the group and marks a historic moment for Ronaldo, who became the first player to reach 200 international appearances.
Ronaldo had already broken the record for most international appearances during a previous Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein in March, surpassing Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa’s previous record of 196 matches.
Portugal faced a tough challenge from Iceland, struggling to break the deadlock. However, their chances improved after Willum Thor Willumsson of Iceland was shown a red card for a rough tackle. With the numerical advantage, Portugal increased the pressure and eventually found the winning goal.
Ronaldo’s goal initially appeared to be offside, but the VAR replay confirmed that he was just onside. This goal marked his 123rd for Portugal, solidifying his position as the all-time leading international goalscorer.
With this victory, Portugal remains at the top of Group J with 12 points, two ahead of second-placed Slovakia, who won their match against Liechtenstein earlier in the day.
The match started with Portugal taking the initiative, but Iceland gradually gained control and had two excellent opportunities to take the lead in the first half. However, Portugal responded in the second half and gradually imposed themselves on the game, ultimately securing the win with Ronaldo’s goal.
