Former President Donald Trump’s fundraising operation for the 2024 election amassed over $35 million in the second quarter, almost doubling the amount raised in the previous reporting period, according to three campaign officials who spoke to CNBC on Wednesday.

The substantial amount was brought in by Trump’s joint committee from April to June, coinciding with the former president’s not guilty plea in two separate criminal cases.

Trump’s legal challenges potentially fueled his fundraising efforts, as the Trump campaign experienced significant surges in donations following his March indictment in New York and the subsequent federal indictment in June.

Anonymous campaign officials revealed that the average donation to the Trump campaign was $34. These figures were disclosed in advance of the July 15 filing deadline.

The joint fundraising committee consists of Trump’s campaign and his leadership PAC, Save America. In the first quarter of the year, they raised $18.8 million, with the campaign receiving $14.4 million of that total.

It is unclear how much of the second-quarter funds were contributed by Trump’s campaign versus Save America.

Trump has prominently used his legal challenges as a key component of his campaign messaging and fundraising appeals. The former president consistently criticizes the prosecutors involved in his cases in Manhattan criminal court and federal court in Miami.

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump launched a scathing attack on special counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the criminal investigation related to Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and resulting federal charges, even going so far as to call him a “crackhead.”

The impressive fundraising amount further solidifies Trump’s position as the clear frontrunner in the Republican presidential primary. His main competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has yet to make a significant impact in national polls within the GOP field.

Earlier on Wednesday, Politico reported on Trump’s second quarter fundraising figures.
