Creditors Feel ‘Betrayed’ as Debts of Nearly £2.6m Accumulate in Business Operated by Kate’s Parents

Creditors are enraged by the dire financial situation of Party Pieces Holdings, a business founded by the parents of the late Princess of Wales. The company, run by Michael and Carole Middleton, has accumulated a staggering debt of £2.6 million. Notably, one businessman has accused Princess Diana’s mother of ‘betrayal’ in light of this revelation. The administrators’ report estimates that creditors are unlikely to recover their money, leaving them in a precarious situation. Among those affected is the Party Pieces landlord, Lord Iliffe, who faces significant financial consequences due to the company’s outstanding debt of £57,480. Another creditor has expressed their frustration, particularly with the large sums owed to HMRC, which dwarf the other liabilities. The report highlights that HMRC is owed a total of £613,000, which must be settled before smaller creditors can be paid. Sultani Gas, a helium supplier for Party Pieces, is also extremely unhappy about the situation. Party Pieces’ decline is attributed to lockdowns and the cost of living crisis, which caused a drop in sales and cash flow issues. The pandemic caused a substantial decline in revenue for the company, from £4.5 million to £3.2 million between 2021 and 2022, resulting in an overall loss of £900,000. In early 2023, the CEO resigned, and efforts were made by the Middletons and the board to save the company and find a buyer. Despite approaching 175 potential buyers, Party Pieces was only able to secure a deal for £180,000, covering the value of stock and intellectual property. James Sinclair, a successful children’s party entrepreneur, acquired the struggling business in May. Sinclair, known as the ‘Millionaire Clown,’ runs a £30 million leisure empire and intends to breathe new life into Party Pieces. He has taken over as CEO, and all 12 employees will transfer to the new company. Sinclair is confident in his ability to turn the company’s fortunes around, drawing inspiration from figures such as Sir Richard Branson. Having built his own successful business from a young age, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Party Pieces. While the sale was carried out through a pre-pack administration, relieving the company of some liabilities, Sinclair’s leadership offers hope for a brighter future for Party Pieces.
