Speculation has heightened as members of the grand jury, responsible for evaluating evidence in the special counsel probe of potential 2020 election interference involving Donald Trump and others, left a federal courthouse on Tuesday. This has led to anticipation of an imminent indictment against the former president.
It has been two weeks since Trump acknowledged being a target in the federal investigation into his alleged involvement in efforts to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. Special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation also focuses on the events surrounding the January 6th Capitol riot.
Receiving a target letter solidified the notion that Trump would likely face charges in the election probe.
The grand jury convened last Thursday but adjourned for the day without revealing any indication of whether they had made decisions on returning indictments.
On Tuesday morning, they proceeded to their designated area on the third floor of the E. Barrett Prettyman courthouse in Washington, D.C., as reported by NBC News journalists present in the building.
After breaking for lunch around noon ET, the grand jurors resumed their meeting approximately an hour later. They were observed leaving the courthouse around 2 p.m.
Trump has already faced two indictments since launching his 2024 presidential campaign, which marks his third attempt to secure the White House.
In March, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with falsifying business records in connection to hush money payments made prior to the 2016 election, allegedly to women who claimed to have had extramarital affairs with Trump.
In June, Trump faced 37 criminal counts in a case centered around the mishandling of classified records after his departure from the White House in 2021. Both federal probes into Trump’s alleged wrongdoing are being led by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Last week, a superseding indictment was filed in the classified documents case, adding further charges against Trump.
These new charges are related to an alleged attempt by Trump and his co-defendants to delete surveillance footage from Mar-a-Lago, the Florida resort where the top secret records were stored. Carlos de Oliveira, a property manager at the club who has been included as the third defendant in the case, allegedly informed another Mar-a-Lago employee that “the boss” wanted to delete a server containing the security footage, according to prosecutors.
In a social media post over the weekend, Trump vehemently denied any involvement in the deletion of the tapes, emphasizing that they were “voluntarily handed over” to Smith’s prosecutors. He criticized the former president, referring to them as “thugs.”
Trump’s post also stated, “We did not even go to court to stop them from getting these tapes. I never told anybody to delete them.”
