Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger will propose a resolution to designate the iconic Old Glory oak tree in Stevenson Ranch as a historic landmark.
Recognized for its cultural significance, the tree gained fame 20 years ago when it was saved from destruction during a development project in the area.
Barger expressed the importance of preserving this symbol of strength and perseverance, stating, “We must be diligent environmental stewards and ensure the protection of community assets like Old Glory. It deserves the status of being a Los Angeles County Historic Landmark.”
Believed to be over 400 years old, the 70-foot oak tree faced potential removal for a housing and urban development project in Pico Canyon. However, due to the efforts of John Quigley and a group of environmentalists, an agreement was reached to relocate Old Glory instead.
In March, a reunion was held at the new location of Old Glory in Pico Canyon Park to commemorate the tree’s rescue 20 years ago.
Reflecting on the event, Quigley remarked, “That moment with Old Glory was a testament to the power of nature. It brought together the right people to save the tree, almost like there was a higher force at work.”
Barger’s motion calls for the initiation of the nomination process for Old Glory as a Los Angeles County Historic Landmark by the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning.
Lynne Plambeck, a member of the Newhall Water District Board at the time of Old Glory’s preservation, played a key role in organizing the reunion and advocating for the tree’s historical designation.
During the reunion, Quigley returned to the tree, further emphasizing its significance. Members of the Santa Clarita City Council and activists joined the event, highlighting the importance of the tree to the community.
Plambeck emphasized the growing awareness of the significance of oak trees, stating, “People are starting to understand the importance of oak trees. This tree brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds and saved a piece of nature.”
