Morgan, the talented Wilder Days singer who is only 28 years old, recently opened up about her family’s history with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are associated with an increased risk of cancer. This same gene mutation led Angelina Jolie to undergo a double mastectomy ten years ago. Morgan shared her own diagnosis on social media and discussed her proactive approach to managing her risk.
Morgan’s aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer at 30 years old and had a double mastectomy, which revealed that she carried the gene for both breast and ovarian cancer. Following this, Morgan’s mother also tested positive for the gene and underwent a total hysterectomy and mastectomy. Even Morgan’s cousin was affected by the gene mutation.
Initially, Morgan was hesitant to be tested, but her mother’s persistence led her to undergo the genetic test. The results confirmed that she carries the gene, increasing her risk of breast cancer to 20 to 40 percent, compared to the average woman’s 13 percent risk. Realizing that the likelihood of developing cancer was high, Morgan made the decision to have the surgery and find peace of mind, rather than constantly worrying about the possibility.
Morgan’s decision was further reinforced by conversations with doctors who explained the importance of early intervention. She wants more people to be aware of genetic testing and its role in cancer prevention. Since sharing her own experience on social media, Morgan has received numerous messages from individuals who were unaware of the testing option and the potential risks. She believes that this topic should be discussed more openly and frequently.
In addition to her surgery, Morgan also plans to freeze her eggs to preserve the possibility of having children in the future. Despite her young age, Morgan has faced various challenges, including mental health issues and alcoholism. She started drinking heavily at 19 years old, but eventually realized that she had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and made the necessary changes to become sober at 22.
Through her music, Morgan hopes to start meaningful conversations about addiction and normalize discussions surrounding this topic. Her song “The Night” touches on her personal struggle with addiction, and she believes that the more people talk about it, the more it will become accepted and understood.
Morgan’s talent and bravery have not gone unnoticed. Her album, Reckless, was recognized as one of Rolling Stone’s Best Country Albums of the Year. She is now preparing to release her next album, Psychopath, in August.
